Welcome to the Running Group
u3A Runners
We are a new group for u3A members wishing to try, maintain or even improve their running. We aim to have a balance of easy activity, a few challenges … and even some fun!
We meet weekly, starting at Rothbury 5-a-side pitch (entrance is next to Whitton Road bus stops) on alternating Mondays (1pm-2pm) and Tuesdays (10am-11am).
A list of dates for the coming months will be published in advance. You are welcome to come to any or all sessions.
Here are dates up to the end of August 2026:
Week 1’s (Every other Monday, 1pm to 2pm):
15/6, 29/6, 13/7, 27/7, 10/8, 24/8
Week 2’s (Every other Tuesday, 10am to 11am):
23/6, 7/7, 21/7, 4/8, 18/8.
Sessions usually include Warm up, drills, short runs, with rests, followed by a longer run (probably along the river), and finally cool down, followed by an optional cuppa/bevvy in a local venue (to be decided on the day).
Participants will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear, and bring some hydration.
If you are interested, please contact Barry (use the coordinator link above).
If you’re not sure, by all means just come along first to see what we do!

Running Expectations:
The map below shows our ‘usual’ route along the river path (start is at top right). The furthest anyone will normally go is to Lady Bridge and back, but we follow a similar structure to the NHS Couch to 5k programme (see link below), so nobody is expected to do the whole distance. Everyone participates within their own range.
When we have sufficient runners, one will take the front of the pack and one the rear. It will be perfectly fine to do some walking with some jogging and the faster runners will typically keep doubling back. It’s time being active, rather than distance which is key.
